Locula is an ophthalmic preparation of sulphacetamide sodium for the treatment of common inflammatory disorders of the eye
Sulphacetamide sodium (Locula) has remarkable fungistatic activity against Aspergillus, Candida albicans, Penicillium chrysogenum, Curvalaria lunata responsible for corneal infections. Sulphacetamide penetrates readily into aqueous humour and ocular tissues in high concentrations
Locula is useful in the management of conjunctivitis, iritis, corneal ulcer, ophthalmia neonatorum, blepharitis and other superficial ocular infections due to susceptible microorganisms.
Hypersensitivity to sulphonamides.
There may be local irritation, transient stinging or burning with 30% solution. Sensitivity reactions are rare.
Locula is incompatible with silver preparations. Non-susceptible organisms may proliferate with the use of sulphonamide preparations. Sulphonamides are inactivated by para-aminobenzoic acid present in purulent exudates. Sensitization and
cross-sensitivity between different sulphonamides may occur. On development of signs of sensitivity or untoward reactions use of Locula should be discontinued
Dosage & Administration
2 drops of Locula to be instilled into the conjunctival sac every 2 hours initially. The time interval may be increased as the condition responds. 10% or 20% solutions for mild and chronic infections and 30% solution for acute and severe cases.
